About Yuichi

Yuichi Hirakawa is a distinguished drummer who has been an integral part of the New York City jazz scene for nearly three decades. With performances at some of the world’s most iconic venues, including Blue Note New York, Blue Note Tokyo, Birdland, 55 Bar, Bottom Line and Side Door Jazz Club, he has earned widespread recognition from both peers and audiences alike. Since 2001, his jazz ensemble has held a weekly residency at Arthur's Tavern in Greenwich Village, a testament to his enduring presence in the city’s vibrant jazz community.

Known for his unique ability to fuse powerful rhythms with subtle musicality, Yuichi’s drumming style is both dynamic and nuanced. His performances are characterized by an uncanny ability to support and enhance the melodic lines of other instruments, while simultaneously adding layers of complexity and texture. While his expertise lies in jazz, Yuichi is also an accomplished performer in the realms of blues and R&B, where his deep grooves and soulful rhythms complement the emotional depth of these genres. His solos, though technically impressive, always remain grounded in the larger musical context, reflecting his profound understanding of the interplay between rhythm and melody.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Yuichi’s journey into percussion began in kindergarten when he first played the xylophone and was praised by his teacher for his exceptional sense of rhythm. This early recognition sparked his lifelong passion for the drums. His love for jazz was ignited in junior high school, when he first encountered the genre and began playing the drum set. Driven to further his musical ambitions, Yuichi enrolled in a university renowned for its student jazz orchestra. In his sophomore year, the band he played with won the prestigious Yamano College Big Band Jazz Contest, one of Japan's most esteemed and acknowledged nationwide competitions in the student jazz scene.

Graduating from the university, Yuichi moved to the United States after being awarded a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music. He graduated with a Professional Diploma in Performance and Jazz Composition, studying jazz drumming with Joe Hunt and Jon Hazilla, and jazz composition with Greg Hopkins and Jeff Friedman. During his time at Berklee, he was honored with the Cuccinello Percussion Award and the Berklee Percussion Department Achievement Award.

Yuichi relocated to New York City in mid 1990s, where he has since become a fixture in the city’s dynamic jazz scene. Immersing himself in late-night jam sessions and local performances, he quickly built a reputation as a versatile, reliable, and highly skilled drummer, performing regularly in renowned jazz clubs across the city.

Alongside his professional career, Yuichi pursued further academic studies, earning a Master of Arts in Music with a concentration in Jazz Performance from The City College of New York. During his time there, he studied jazz and contemporary drumming with Charli Persip and Kim Plainfield, and jazz ensemble and arranging with the legendary jazz bassist Ron Carter.

Yuichi’s journey from his early percussion beginnings to his current standing as a sought-after drummer in New York City is a testament to his dedication, versatility, and passion for the art form. His ability to blend traditional swing with modern rhythms has created a distinctive style that seamlessly adapts to a wide range of jazz subgenres, as well as blues and R&B. Whether performing in a straight-ahead jazz setting, exploring avant-garde sounds, or laying down a solid groove in a blues or R&B context, Yuichi remains committed to the evolution of jazz. As he continues to perform and collaborate with musicians across diverse genres, he constantly seeks to bring new perspectives to his performances and inspire audiences around the world.
